Offtrace

Make a plan for exposed personal information.

An address on a directory, a phone number on a profile, and a search result can need different requests. Start with one page and keep only the details you need to follow up.

Identify the page that holds the information

Open the original page to understand where the information is published. A search result is a route to that page, not necessarily the publisher. Use a neutral case title such as ‘Old directory listing’ rather than repeating your home address in the title.

  1. Save the specific page link rather than a broad search query.
  2. Choose whether the case concerns your own information or someone you are authorized to represent.
  3. Do not add identity documents, passwords, financial details, or unnecessary personal information to Offtrace notes.

Find the publisher's official removal route

Look for the site's privacy, contact, or opt-out page. For a people-search listing, check the process for that particular directory. Read the requirements before submitting and provide any requested verification directly through the official process. Offtrace prepares a draft; you review and send it yourself.

  1. Use a separate case for each website so responses stay distinct.
  2. Record the date you submitted the request and the next date you want to check.
  3. If a website declines, read its reason before deciding whether another official route applies.

Handle search visibility separately

Google accepts requests for certain private information, including contact details, under its policies. Review its current eligibility rules; a request is not a promise of removal. Removing a Google result does not delete the source page or remove it from other search engines. Track a source request and a search request separately.

Review what actually changed

When you receive a response, check the page and record the outcome you observed. If the source changed but Google still shows old information, review its outdated-content process. Keep a follow-up date for unresolved cases. Offtrace does not automatically monitor listings or verify their removal.

Eligibility and website policies can change. Review the official process before sending a request.
